Where India genuinely leads
On conventional flaxseed India is a mid-sized origin — Canada, Belgium and Kazakhstan move far larger volumes, and it is worth saying so rather than implying otherwise.
On organic flaxseed, the position reverses: Indian shipments account for roughly 62 percent of global organic flax exports, well ahead of China and Türkiye. If you are sourcing certified organic, India is not a price alternative to the established origins — it is the main origin. Specify your scope certificate and lot-level transaction certificates as named contract documents, and confirm that the certifying body is recognised by your destination market, because recognition is where organic programmes most often come unstuck.
Cadmium: the parameter cleaning cannot fix
This is the section that decides whether a lot clears, and it is specific to this crop in a way most buyers underestimate.
Flax takes up cadmium from soil more readily than most crops, and several markets set maximum levels for cadmium in oilseeds. The consequence that catches people out is structural:
Cadmium is a growing and sourcing question, not a processing one. No amount of destoning, gravity separation or optical sorting removes it, because it is inside the seed rather than on it. A supplier who answers a cadmium question by describing their cleaning line has misunderstood the problem. Specify a cadmium limit with the testing laboratory and sampling plan named, require the result on the shipped lot rather than a historical certificate, and ask how the supplier manages sourcing against it — which growing areas, and whether they test incoming raw material before processing. That last question separates the suppliers who have thought about this from the ones who haven’t.
Rancidity, and why milled flax is a different purchase
Flaxseed is around forty percent oil, and that oil is very highly unsaturated — which is exactly why the product sells and exactly why it degrades.
Whole seed is relatively protected by its hull. Milling removes that protection and exposes the oil, so ground flax, flax meal and flax flour deteriorate far faster than whole seed.
If you are buying milled material, specify the milling date, peroxide value, free fatty acid, barrier packaging and a shorter agreed shelf life — and agree shelf life from milling, not from arrival. Buying ground flax on a whole-seed specification is the most expensive routine mistake in this product. For whole seed, specify peroxide value and the packing date as well, since long storage in a hot warehouse will still tell.
Three streams, three specifications
| Stream | Notes |
|---|---|
| Food grade | Whole or milled; tight cleaning, cadmium limit, microbiology, organic where contracted |
| Feed grade | Specified against feed limits; cyanogenic glycoside position relevant at high inclusion |
| Industrial linseed | For oil used in paints, putty and linoleum — a different trade with a different specification and price |
Declare the intended use at enquiry. It prevents both overpaying for an industrial requirement and under-specifying a food one. Note also that flaxseed naturally contains cyanogenic glycosides; some markets give guidance on this for high-inclusion food uses and for feed, and heat treatment reduces them. If your application involves high inclusion levels, confirm the position for your market with your own regulatory adviser rather than assuming.
Brown and golden are two products
Golden or yellow flax carries a retail premium because it is visually distinct in a finished product; brown is the volume grade. Colour mixing shows instantly in a clear pack, so specify a maximum percentage of off-colour seeds as its own contract line, agreed against a retained sealed reference sample with the crop year stated.
Cleaning, moisture and microbiology
Flaxseed is small and flat, which makes it behave differently from round seeds on a cleaning line. Specify total ash and acid insoluble ash as separate lines — acid insoluble ash is the soil indicator — plus separate limits for foreign matter, other seeds and weed seeds, and ask which cleaning steps are on the line in order.
Specify moisture at packing with the date. And because flaxseed is frequently eaten without further cooking — in smoothies, on cereal, in baking that may not reach a reliable kill temperature — specify the microbiological panel including Salmonella in 25 g and ask where the kill step sits in the supplier’s process.
Reference specification
| Parameter | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Type | Brown or golden; whole or milled — named |
| Stream | Food, feed or industrial — declared |
| Purity | To contracted percentage, commonly 99.5% or higher for sortex-cleaned grades |
| Off-colour seeds | Maximum percentage, own line, against retained sample |
| Cadmium | Limit, with laboratory and sampling plan named, result on the shipped lot |
| Other heavy metals | To destination limits |
| Peroxide value, free fatty acid | Specified; the rancidity control |
| Milling and packing date | Stated; shelf life agreed from milling for ground material |
| Oil content | Where relevant, with basis and method |
| Moisture | At packing, with date |
| Total ash / acid insoluble ash | Separate lines |
| Foreign matter, other seeds, weed seeds | Separate limits |
| Salmonella | Absent in 25 g on the shipped lot; kill step described |
| TPC, yeast and mould, E. coli | To buyer limits |
| Pesticide residues | To destination list |
| Organic | Scope and lot-level transaction certificates; certifying body recognised by destination |
| Non-GMO | Declared |
Origin and season
Indian flaxseed comes principally from Madhya Pradesh, with Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and Maharashtra also producing. It is a rabi crop, sown after the monsoon and harvested in the first quarter, so new-crop material is available early in the year — which matters for a high-oil seed, since the fresher the crop at packing the more shelf life you are buying.
Packing, loading and documentation
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Bags | 25 kg PP or paper with liner; retail packs to buyer artwork from one full container load |
| 20 ft container | Around 22 to 25 MT depending on packing |
| Container prep | Clean, dry, odour-free; barrier lining and desiccant on humid routes |
| Customs heading | Flaxseed has its own heading, HS 1204.00 — but Indian export records show material moving under other headings too, so agree the eight-digit sub-heading with your broker and ask for consistent declaration across shipments |
- Importer Exporter Code from DGFT; APEDA registration; FSSAI licence; food safety management certification; halal and kosher where your market requires
- Certificate of analysis: purity, off-colour percentage, moisture at packing, peroxide value, free fatty acid, total ash and acid insoluble ash separately, foreign matter, other and weed seeds, oil content where relevant
- Cadmium report with laboratory and sampling plan named, on the shipped lot; other heavy metals
- Microbiological report including Salmonella in 25 g, with the kill step described
- Pesticide residue report against the destination list
- Milling and packing dates; agreed shelf life for ground material
- Organic scope and transaction certificates where organic is contracted, with the certifying body stated
- Phytosanitary certificate; certificate of origin; commercial invoice, packing list and bill of lading
How to qualify an Indian flaxseed supplier
- State brown or golden, whole or milled, and the stream before price.
- Ask for a cadmium result on a recent lot with the laboratory named — and ask how they source against it.
- Ask whether incoming raw material is tested for cadmium before processing.
- For milled material, agree milling date, peroxide value, barrier packing and shelf life explicitly.
- Ask for acid insoluble ash as a separate figure and the cleaning line in order.
- Specify maximum off-colour seeds and request a sealed reference sample.
- For organic, verify the certifying body is recognised in your destination before contracting.
Frequently asked questions
- Why is cadmium first?
- Flax takes up cadmium from soil more readily than most crops, and several markets set limits. Cleaning cannot remove it because it is inside the seed — it is a sourcing question.
- Is milled flax the same purchase?
- No. Milling exposes the oil and deterioration accelerates sharply. Specify milling date, peroxide value, barrier packing and a shorter shelf life.
- Brown or golden?
- Separate products at separate prices. Specify maximum off-colour seeds against a retained sample.
- Does India lead in anything here?
- Yes — organic flaxseed, where Indian shipments are around 62 percent of global organic flax exports.
- What about cyanogenic glycosides?
- Flaxseed naturally contains them; some markets give guidance for high-inclusion food uses and feed, and heat treatment reduces them. Confirm your market’s position.
- How much loads into a container?
- Around 22 to 25 MT in a 20-foot container depending on packing.
