Certified organic coriander seed from India: variety, volatile oil and specification
This guide opens by telling you when not to buy from India, because coriander is the one spice where the origin decision is genuinely binary and a published industry standard settles it. On the demand side, 2024 figures put Pakistan first at about $24.6M, then Malaysia (~$18.3M), Sri Lanka (~$12.2M), the United States (~$8.7M), India itself (~$8.0M), Japan (~$5.3M), Poland (~$5.0M), Thailand, Germany (~$2.7M) and Brazil. Within Europe the structure matters more than the ranking: Poland is the transit hub, taking around 65% of Russia’s exports to Europe and re-exporting to Germany and the Netherlands, while Italy is India’s largest European market at roughly 32% of Indian shipments.

Organic Coriander

If you are buying for essential oil, India is the wrong origin

There are two commercial coriander types, and they are not interchangeable. The difference is not a matter of grade or quality — it is the plant.

TypeSeed and oilOriginsUsed for
Small-seeded (Microcarpum)No more than 3 mm; strong flavour, high essential oil. ESA Quality Minima set a minimum volatile oil of 0.6 ml/100 gRussia, Bulgaria, UkraineEssential oil extraction, high-flavour applications
Large-seeded (vulgare / Macrocarpum)Over 3 mm, oval; lower oil, below 0.5 ml/100 g, and no set ESA minimum — buyers and sellers agree sensory flavour properties insteadIndia, MoroccoThe spice trade: curries, masalas, spice blends, whole and ground culinary use

So: if your use is essential oil extraction, buy small-seeded material from an origin that grows it. We would rather say that at enquiry stage than sell you a container that cannot do the job. If your use is the spice trade — curry powder, masala blends, whole or ground culinary coriander — the large-seeded Indian type is precisely what that market is built on, and the lower volatile oil figure is a characteristic of the product rather than a defect in it.

Name the variety in your product specification. This is not a formality: buyers may treat mixed varieties as fraud, and a specification that is silent on type leaves the question open in exactly the place where it should be closed.

And two more honest notes on position

India is Europe’s second-largest coriander supplier, at about a 16% share and roughly 4,300 tonnes in 2023 — but only about 3.9% of India’s total coriander exports go to Europe, even though that trade grew around 3.5% a year over five years. And Indian coriander is relatively expensive in the European market. If you are buying purely on price for a bulk blending application, Eastern European or Moroccan material may beat us. Where India earns the premium is green colour, culinary character and organic availability.

Indian coriander faces a 20% border check — and organic is a real answer to it

This is the regulatory fact that should shape your contract, and it is specific to this origin.

Coriander seed from India is subject to increased frequency of checks for pesticide residues at 20%. RASFF has recorded several cases of chlorpyrifos above the maximum residue level in coriander seed and ground coriander. MRLs are set under Regulation (EC) No 396/2005, and product above them is removed from the market.

Here organic does more than it does in most of our range. The pesticides driving those alerts are prohibited inputs under organic rules, not merely discouraged ones — so certified organic production is a genuine structural answer to the exact thing the border is testing for.

But organic is not an exemption, and we will not pretend otherwise. The increased check applies to the origin, regardless of organic status. Your lot will still be sampled; the only question is whether it passes. So name chlorpyrifos explicitly in the residue panel rather than relying on a generic multi-residue screen, agree the sampling plan in the contract, and confirm current control frequencies with your own regulatory advisers — they are revised periodically and they are the destination’s call, not a supplier’s.

And organic is not an analytical zero

The standing point across our organic range holds here too. Organic certification governs what may be applied; drift from neighbouring conventional fields and carry-over on shared cleaning and milling lines do produce detections in genuinely organic product. Keep the residue plan in the contract for organic coriander as well — particularly given the border position above.

What the grades mean, and what the premium actually costs

The Indian trade works in named grades rather than numeric classes, and the premium is driven by colour, aroma and cleanliness more than by size.

  • Eagle — the premium bright green grade
  • Double parrot and single parrot — the conventional green grades below it
  • Standard — usually quoted at 99.9% purity

Premium lots must be bright green and well cleaned; lower grades are described in the trade as weathered or mixed in colour. Indicative FOB New Delhi prices from mid-May show the spread:

GradeIndicative FOB (EUR/kg)
Organic whole~2.04
Conventional double parrot~1.40
Standard 99.9% purity~1.05
Eagle, split 98%~1.04

Treat those as illustration rather than a quotation — they move with the season. But they show two things worth knowing before you negotiate. The organic premium in coriander is real and substantial. And splitting a premium grade collapses its value: Eagle at 98% split trades near standard material, because what you were paying for was the intact bright green seed.

Which means two specification lines matter more than usual. Specify whole versus split explicitly, and specify colour against a sealed reference sample — green fades with age, light and hot stowage, so the sample and the stowage conditions are both part of the deal.

Salmonella, steam, and the volatile oil you cannot spare

Salmonella must be completely absent. Coriander seed has no specific microbiological limits under Regulation (EC) No 2073/2005, so the general European limits apply, and the Codex Code of Hygienic Practice for Low-Moisture Foods (CXC 75-2015) is the relevant reference framework.

European buyers favour heat sterilisation as the chemical-free route, and it is expensive enough that using a third-party service is often the practical answer. For organic there is no alternative at all: irradiation and ethylene oxide are both out, so validated steam is the only route.

And here is where it bites harder for this origin than for most. Steam strips volatile oil — and the large-seeded Indian type already sits below 0.5 ml/100 g before any treatment. There is less to lose, so losing it matters more. Specify the volatile oil minimum on the lot as shipped, after sterilisation, name the measurement method, and ask for both the pre-treatment and post-treatment figures. If your application is flavour-critical, discuss the steam parameters before you contract, not after you smell the first delivery.

The European quality parameters worth writing in

The ESA Quality Minima Document gives a usable backbone, and naming it saves argument:

ParameterReference figure
Extraneous matterNo more than 1%
Foreign matterNone over 2 mm; seeds intact and free of off-odours
Total ash7% maximum
Acid-insoluble ash1.5% maximum — the sand and soil indicator
MoistureESA 12% maximum; buyers often ask for 9–14%, so state yours
Particle size (ground)Typically 95–99.5% through a sieve, usually 500 microns
Volatile oil0.6 ml/100 g minimum for small-seeded Microcarpum; no set minimum for the large-seeded type — agree sensory properties and a contracted figure instead

The organic paperwork, in three layers

Origin, season and shipping

Indian coriander comes mainly from Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat, with Ramganj in Rajasthan the largest trading hub. It is a rabi crop, sown around October and November and harvested from February into April. Certified organic volume is aggregated from certified grower groups, so lot consistency, sealed retention samples and early volume commitment matter — and in coriander the sealed sample does double duty, because it fixes the green colour you are buying.

ItemDetail
Packing25 kg and 50 kg PP bags with food-grade inner liner; barrier packing where volatile oil retention over a long voyage matters
Container preparationClean, dry, odour-free, with a previous-cargo declaration. Coriander is aromatic and will both take up and give off odour — keep it away from other aromatics in stow, and avoid hot stowage and light exposure, which darken the green
Storage pestsOrganic prohibits synthetic fumigants, so control is typically controlled atmosphere, CO₂ or Modified Atmosphere Treatment under NSPM-25. Have the method named on the documents
Tariff classificationHS 0909.21 for coriander seed neither crushed nor ground; HS 0909.22 for crushed or ground. Confirm eight-digit subheadings with your customs broker

How to qualify an organic coriander supplier

  1. State your end use first. If it is essential oil extraction, say so and expect to be pointed to a small-seeded origin.
  2. Name the variety in the specification — large-seeded or Microcarpum.
  3. Specify whole versus split; splitting collapses the value of a premium grade.
  4. Give the grade and the purity figure, not the trade name alone.
  5. Fix colour against a sealed reference sample before the first order.
  6. Contract volatile oil on the lot as shipped, post-sterilisation, with the method named.
  7. Ask for pre- and post-treatment volatile oil figures for the lot.
  8. Name chlorpyrifos explicitly in the residue panel and agree the sampling plan.
  9. Require Salmonella absence and ask for the steam process validation.
  10. Check the previous cargo and the stowage plan; coriander takes up odour and loses green in heat and light.

Frequently asked questions

Which countries import the most coriander seed?
On 2024 HS 0909.21 figures: Pakistan (~$24.6M), Malaysia (~$18.3M), Sri Lanka (~$12.2M), the USA (~$8.7M), India (~$8.0M), Japan (~$5.3M), Poland (~$5.0M), Thailand, Germany (~$2.7M) and Brazil. In Europe, Poland is the transit hub and Italy is India’s largest market.
Can I use Indian coriander for essential oil?
Generally no. The large-seeded Indian type sits below 0.5 ml/100 g volatile oil with no ESA minimum, while the small-seeded Microcarpum type from Russia, Bulgaria and Ukraine carries an ESA minimum of 0.6 ml/100 g and is what oil producers buy. India is built for the spice trade.
Does Indian coriander get extra border checks?
Yes — a 20% increased frequency of checks for pesticide residues, with RASFF cases of chlorpyrifos above MRL. Organic is a real structural answer because those inputs are prohibited, but it is not an exemption: your lot is still sampled.
What is Eagle grade?
The premium bright green Indian grade, above double parrot and single parrot. Premium depends on colour, aroma and cleanliness. Note that Eagle at 98% split trades near standard material — the value is in the intact green seed.
Why specify volatile oil after sterilisation?
Because organic rules out irradiation and ethylene oxide, leaving validated steam, and steam strips volatile oil. The large-seeded Indian type starts below 0.5 ml/100 g, so there is less to lose. Ask for both pre- and post-treatment figures.
